AI Literacy Without Fear

How do we navigate the transition from passive technology use to active technological agency? At RootedLabs, we believe the answer lies in foundational literacy that prioritises human inquiry over technical instruction.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of generative artificial intelligence, the discourse often centers on productivity and automation. However, in the context of K–12 education, the focus must shift towards cognitive development and the preservation of human intelligence. When we talk about "AI Literacy Without Fear", we are addressing the fundamental shift in how children interact with knowledge.

The Human Element

Research suggests that early exposure to black-box systems can lead to a 'displacement effect' where children outsource critical thinking to algorithms. Our lab's approach is to 'unplug' the complexity, breaking down AI into its sensing, logic, and value components. By doing so, we demystify the technology and return the power of decision-making to the learner.

Whether through playful unplugged activities or structured research projects, the goal remains consistent: to foster a generation that views technology as a thinking partner, not a surrogate for effort. This is the heart of our mission at RootedLabs.
